Sugar Tax Imposed in Morocco

In 2018/2019, Hon. Dr. Mostafa Brahimi, Vice President of PDGN, along with other members of the Social Sectors Committee, pushed for a 50% increase in the internal consumption tax on sugary drinks. Dr. Brahimi has pushed for higher tax rates—specifically proposing rates of MAD 45, 50, and 55 per 100 liters based on sugar concentration. He has also advocated for extending the tax to other products like salt, fat, and tobacco. The tax has led to a reduction in production of some sugary drinks by nearly 30% and has forced manufacturers to reformulate products.
